The Japanese attempt to occupy Nauru and the nearby Ocean islands, was in response to losing of the Battle Of Coral Sea . The Japanese Commander-in-Chief, Shigeyoshi Inouye , ordered the general retreat, while attempting to follow the intentions of Operation Mo 's original plan, the occupation of Nauru and nearby Ocean islands. ''Operation Mo'' originally was intended as an action to take over Phosphate resources and opening areas for secondary bases for future operations against Australian Forces. On May 10, the Landing Task Force of Rear Admiral Shima , departed from Rabaul , but at next day the American submarine S-42 intercepted this convoy, and proceeded to sink the minesweeper Okinoshima . Such a loss, along with the announcement from recon planes of a new American force 600km East of Salomon Islands , led Admiral Inouye to decide to stop the operation and order the transports to navigate to a base at Truk . |
