A primary election was held on June 6 , 2006, to determine who would represent the Democratic and Republican parties in the November 7 general election. Secretary of State Chet Culver (D) and United States Representative Jim Nussle (R) received their party's respective nominations. In the election, Culver defeated Nussle to win the governorship, by a margin of 54.4 percent to 44.1 percent 1.
