City High School is a Public High School in Iowa City , Iowa . It was founded in 1938 as part of the Public Works Projects started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide jobs. The first classes were held in the fall of 1939.
The first high school building was converted to a junior high school after the new building opened. It was located where Mercy Medical Plaza now stands. The new building sits atop a hill on the East side of Iowa City and the tip of the bell tower is said to be the tallest point in Iowa City .
City High School excels in several areas. The school motto is "The School that Leads." In addition to performing well in sports for many years, City High also stands out in drama, music, and debate.

ATHLETICS

City High is often known for accomplishments in athletics at the state level. Sports Illustrated listed City High as the top sports school in the state of Iowa, citing the school's dominant track and cross country teams. The boys and girls cross country teams have won more than 20 state championships since 1990. Resumes of other City High programs have traditionally been equally as impressive, but athletic success has decreased in recent years, possibly due to decreased enrollment.

An elite group of City High football players were named to the Just Football magazine pre-season All-American team Beri Mazariegos and Mike Maize are on the squad as free and strong safties. Logan Kutcher is a much saught after running back, Tyler McCreedy is a hard hitting linebacker and Tyler Donovan gets a lot of hype for a QB turned wide receiver/puntter. Newcommer Ryan Haught is expected to make great contributions as he has great field vision as a option quarterback. Marcus Espey was awarded the 2006 holder of the year in the Mississippi Valley Conference and is looking to repeat as he will be a captain on the 2007 team.

STUDENT JOURNALISM

City High is home to three student publications, ''The Little Hawk'', The ''Scribe'' and ''Red and White.'' City High's journalism department was also a charter member of international journalism society Quill And Scroll .
  • The Little Hawk, a monthly newspaper, often receives national recognition for journalistic and artistic excellence. In fact, the Little Hawk has earned more National Pacemaker Awards than any other newspaper in the nation.

  • The Scribe is a literary magazine open to submissions from all students. Work for The Scribe is entirely extra-circular and includes poems, essays, photos and drawings. The Scribe has also won many journalistic awards and achievements.

  • Red and White is City High's annual yearbook. While not nearly as accomplished or as high in quality as either of the other student publications, most students and staff members agree that the editors of Red and White try quite hard.

OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
