The original firm was Index Systems, Inc. founded in 1969 by Gerrity and three MIT associates -- Fred Luconi, Rich Carpenter and Jim Champy . Index Systems grew from Gerrity's MIT Sloan School Of Management Doctoral dissertation on Decision Support Systems . Written in PL/1, the system was called Portfolio Management System. Initially Index Systems was a boutique consulting firm, building systems for primarily financial services companies. In the early 1980 s Index Systems began to spin out various parts of their business, including Excellerator, an early CASE Tool from Index Technology, Inc. In the late 1980s Index Systems was renamed to Index Group and successfully commercialized the Business Process Reengineering management consulting movement. At its peak, CSC Index employed over 650 workers in fourteen offices. The firm was dissolved in 1999 and its remaining staff let go except for a handful who were integrated into other CSC divisions. However, Index was a very special place -- relatively small scale, very bright people, innovative, easy management style. Almost 10 years after the company's dissolution, former Indexers continue to get together regularly to celebrate the unique social eco-system that Index represented. |
