REPUBLICAN PRIMARY Batt, who was the 1982 gubernatorial nominee, defeated three other Republicans for the nomination. DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY EchoHawk defeated former state senator Ron Beitelspacher and an unknown candidate to win his party's nomination GENERAL ELECTION Although at first many thought EchoHawk would win the election and become the first Native American governor in the United States, Batt prevailed with an aggressive campaign and with the help of a Republican tide that was especially powerful in Idaho in 1994.
