Hoquiam High School, located within the Hoquiam School District in Hoquiam, Washington , is a comprehensive high school which first opened in 1905. Hoquiam serves as the second largest high school in Grays Harbor county; covering the city of Hoquiam and unincorporated parts of northern Grays Harbor county. The school is Accredited by the Washington State Superintendent Of Public Instruction . Current enrollment is 620. The Principal is Mark VandenHazel and mascot is a grizzly bear. HISTORY Hoquiam High School is one of the oldest high schools in Washington State. The area's rich heritage to the timber industry spurred the growth of Hoquiam Schools in the 1900's. HHS's current campus was constructed in 1968; featuring seven campus buildings along with the mothballed campus stadium project (locally dubbed Sea Breeze Oval) and adjacent Gable Park (operated by the City of Hoquiam) that was constructed 1980. The campus stadium project was designed to replace Olympic Stadium in the late 1970's until community interest/lack of funding persuaded the school district to stay at the historic Olympic Stadium. Only one of the original six concrete sections of the campus stadium were completed; which is in use for sport events. The track was recently resurfaced in 2005 through a Bishop Foundation grant and is the only open-use all weather track available to residence/visitors of Grays Harbor county. Hoquiam School District uses historic Olympic Stadium (operated by the City of Hoquiam), constructed in 1936, in East Hoquiam to play football and varsity baseball games. Olympic Stadium was placed on the list of national historic places at a pre-game ceremony featuring Congressman Norm Dicks before the 2006 Aberdeen/Hoquiam Football game. 2006 National Historic Place List Despite the age of the buildings, the campus is well maintained and boast one of the most beautiful outdoor settings nestled along an alder forest cover. Current academic programs involve basic core subjects with additional programs in wood/metal shops, business education, graphical arts, computer sciences, foreign language, and family/consumer sciences. The school also just launched an online education program starting in the 2007/2008 school year. Hoquiam Online Along with athletic programs, HHS also has additional chapters of Honor Society, FBLA, Knowledge Bowl and ASB. In 2005, Hoquiam and its cross-town rival Aberdeen High School celebrated the 100th football game between the two communities. This event attracted roughly 10,000+ people to Hoquiam's Historic Olympic Stadium, where additional bleachers were brought in from Seattle for the game. HHS also host several successful school invitationals; coordinated by their cross country, wrestling, and volleyball programs. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007 - Girls Wrestling 2006 - Girls Fastpitch 2004 - Boys Basketball 1988 - Boys Wrestling 1983 - Boys Track & Field 1942 - Boys Basketball 1939 - Boys Basketball MAJOR INCIDENTS During the 2006/2007 school year, HHS has struggled with issues involving teacher/coach conduct and declining enrollment. Within a 13 month span, three teachers have been accused and released from duty due to improper conduct within the classroom. Efforts to address these issues are being tackled by administrators, school board, current staff, and community. Hoquiam Teachers Article In December of 2001, Hoquiam School District teachers went on a 14-day strike to address health care issues. This strike was one of the first in Washington State to address health care funding associated with school district employees. The strike was settled in the teacher's favor, but led other school districts across Washington in the following years to strike over similar issues pertaining to a school district's responsibility to cover health care expenses for its full-time employees. COMMUNITY SUPPORT HHS has tremendous community support, with a strong history of passing school levies and high level of parental volunteers.
