High Fidelity

High Fidelity is a very old term, referring back to the fifties of the past century (and perhaps even earlier) when audio technology advanced to a stage that allowed the ambition to extend from mere reproduction to quality sound. Landmarks in HiFi technology are the long play record, FM radio and stereo sound. The introduction of digital audio techniques many years later represents another step towards "higher fidelity", but is not usually associated with the term.
