The Hebrew Communists ( in Israel . HISTORY The Hebrew Communists were originally founded in 1945 by some former members of the Palestine Communist Party (PCP), which had closed down in 1943. However, most of its members defected to Maki (a Hebrew acronym for ''Communist Party of Israel'') when it was launched by other former members of the PCP after Israel's Declaration Of Independence in 1948. The party returned to life during the First Knesset when several of Maki's leaders were purged soon after the elections in 1949. Amongst the purged was Knesset member Eliezer Preminger . Rather than vacate his seat for another Maki member, Preminger remained in the Knesset and restarted the Hebrew Communists. However, the party did not live to fight the 1951 Elections as Preminger closed the party down when he decided to join Mapam later in the same year. EXTERNAL LINKS |
