Hardware Compatibility List

HCL stands for hardware compatibility list. In today's world, there are vast amounts of computer hardware in circulation, and many OSes too. A hardware compatibility list is a database of hardware models and its compatibility with a certain OS.

HCLs can be centrally controlled (one person or team keeps the list of hardware maintained) or user-driven (users submit reviews on hardware they have used).

There are many HCLs, usually each operating system will have an official HCL on their web site. However with Windows pretty much dominating the market, HCLs are rarely used by basic computer users (as virtually all hardware is built to be compatible with Windows out of the box).

On the other hand, HCLs come in very handy when working with less mainstream OSes, such as Linux or BSD.
