6-string hybrid variant of the guitar and banjo Unfairly, the guitar banjo is looked on as something of a novelty instrument for guitarists who have little wish to put the hours in to learn to play the real thing. This is unfortunate as this banjo variant is very much an instrument in its own right, with all the versatility of its 6-string cousin. Most players tend to use standard guitar tuning, but other configurations such as DADGAD or Drop D are just as valid. Predictably, as night follows day, 12-string versions of the guitar banjo have also appeared over the years. The sound is probably best described as jingle-jangle-plunk! The most famous exponent of the guitar banjo was probably the great jazz banjoist, Johnny St. Cyr. Other notable players include: Danny Barker, Papa Charlie Jackson and Clancy Hayes. |
