The Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC) is a small, graduate-level educational institution situated east of downtown Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada . It was created in late 2000 as a partnership among the University Of British Columbia , Simon Fraser University , British Columbia Institute Of Technology , and Emily Carr Institute Of Art And Design with a focus on the cross-disciplinary convergence of science and technology with art, culture, and design.

Following its Strategic Academic Plan, the GNWC has developed education and research in Urban Sustainability and Digital Media . UBC's Solar Light Canopy Project and BCIT's Green Roof Technology Research Centre are housed there. There are plans for a Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) and a Masters program on Sustainability Leadership. The Centre for Digital Media (CDM) is set to launch a Masters program on Digital Media in September 2007. The first cohort will have 35 students, and the degree will be accredited by all four education partners, with their crests and seals on the Parchment .

The application of technology in education at GNWC is quite innovative. Online Blogs and Forums are used to provide information to current and prospective students. A virtual Open House on the online virtual world Second Life was conducted concurrent to the real world open house.

The campus is located on 555 Great Northern Way between Clark Drive and Main Street. It encompasses 8.9 hectares, of which 7.53 hectares were donated by Finning International Inc . A proposed future expansion of the SkyTrain Millennium Line would place the "Finning" station in front of the GNWC, one stop west of the line's current terminus.

The new Centre for Digital Media is located in a separate building at the GNWC, at 577 Great Northern Way, immediately east of the main building.

GUIDING ACADEMIC PRINCIPLES

The partners have agreed to the following principles

  • The academic plan should encompass the concept of a set of integrated academic offerings.

  • Students should be able to complete a course of study to a credential from a mixture of the four partners offerings resulting in a credential that has all four institutions on it.

  • The land will not be divided into four separate and distinct parts. Shared facilities/integrated space/services.

  • There should be a high tech focus.

  • Site development will include a mixture of educational, residential and business uses in a proportion that will make the financing of the total project self-sustaining.

  • Academic and institutional services (e.g. library, registration, student aid, food services, etc.) will be for all students and will be one stop operations (i.e. there will not be 4 of everything).

  • The campus should have a unique identity that will not be confused with the identities of existing downtown campuses of the joint venture partners.

Attributes for consideration

  • Focus campus identity and academic planning on thematic approach such as Urban Sustainability or Entertaining Arts. The campus development and operations should be a model for responsible and innovative urban redevelopment. This concept can include a broad range of issues and study areas including: art, culture, communications, health sciences, political science, environment, engineering, design, lifestyle, socio-economic studies, Urban Planning , renewable energy, recycling, multiple land use, integrated community development, information technologies, etc. It could be the engine for the redevelopment of the rest of the railway lands.

  • World centre of education and research in urban renewal/sustainability. There doesn't appear to be any other educational partnerships or large centres covering this broad area.

  • Multi-disciplinary/multi-institution credentials.

  • Pure and applied research and technology transfer activities that are congruent with academic vision.

  • Embedded high tech in all activities.

  • Integrated teaching, research and learning culture both within and among partner institutions through shared purpose, open communications and cooperative governance.

  • World class standard of urban redevelopment and sustainability corporate/research partnerships.

  • Incubator for business/residential/education partnerships.

  • 21st century focus.

  • Support the growth of knowledge based economy.

  • Innovation and flexibility.

  • Physical and virtual learning/collaboration environment.

  • Learn/collaborate/research anywhere/anytime (wireless world).

  • New opportunities for life long learning.
