Information About

Grayson County High School Kentucky

Grayson County High School ( Leitchfield, Kentucky ) was established in 1974 after the 3 high schools throughout Grayson County were consolidated. Grayson County originally began with one high school in each major community. They were Clarkson School (Red Hawks), Leitchfield High School (Bulldogs), and Caneyville High School (Purple Flash). The new unified county school system chose the cougar for its mascot, with orange and blue as the school colors. The mascot and colors were chosen as neutral factors that did not favor any of the old schools. At the time strong rivalries surrounded each school. For many years each school vied for superiority, mainly on the basketball court.

In the fall of 1974 students who were only months before rivals, came together to begin a new chapter in Grayson County. The student's new rival was Edmonson County . Because of the fierce rivalry, name calling was soon to come. Grayson Countians were called "Swampies", because of having two major lake systems on the east and west boundaries. One of the major factors behind the bitter rivalry was that a successful Grayson County basketball coach was lured to Edmonson County after the newly consolidated Grayson County School System neglected him. To this day the rivalry is strong, and each year the schools play a football game called the "Tobacco Bowl", after the major Cash Crop of both counties. the winning team takes possession of a tobacco stick, and paints it in their schools colors. The old tobacco stick has changed hands numerous times.

Though the school hasn't had great athletic achievement, the students and alumni are strong supporters of the school's teams. The basketball team has won the regional final 2 times. In 1993, and later in 2002. The golf team has had much success, although it's not a closely followed sport. The baseball team has had successful alumni. Ben Schaffer is a former cougar player and now a minor league baseball player. 2004 graduate Gavin Logsdon pitched for the University Of Louisville in the college world series of 2007. This was the college's first trip to the series.

This is also the school of Anna Mae Decker and Jordan Williams. They are the two most awesomest people you can find. www.myspace.com/anna_mae_decker and www.myspace.com/jordan_alexandra_w
