The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore ('''GCT''') {Link without Title} is an autonomous state funded engineering college located in Coimbatore , Tamil Nadu , India . It is currently a constituent college of the Anna University , though a recent bill for reverting the administrative control back to government is pending approval HISTORY The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore was founded in 1945 as the Arthur Hope College of Technology, under the patronage of the philanthropist Shri G.D. Naidu ( Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu ). The college was also offered the offices and portions of the workshop and hostel of the National Electric Works for its facilities. In June 1950, the college moved to the present site of about 45 hectares on Thadagam Road. The College was then renamed Government College of Technology and was affiliated to the University Of Madras in 1951. Initially only Civil and Electrical Engineering programs were offered, but the Mechanical Engineering branch was introduced in 1952. The main building of the college was formally opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then-Vice President of India on October 8, 1959. The syllabus for Engineering Studies was revised and the five-year semester system was introduced in the academic year 1968-69. Postgraduate degree courses in Structural Engineering (Civil) & Engineering Design (Mechanical) were started during 1971. On the introduction of the 10+2 scheme, admission to the five-year B.E. degree course ceased from the academic year 1980-81 onward and the four-year B.E. degree courses began. In 1981, the college was granted autonomy for its civil and mechanical engineering postgraduate programs. In 1987, full autonomy for all programs was granted. Beginning in 2001-02, all undergraduate and postgraduate courses have been affiliated to Anna University . Since then, six new postgraduate courses have been started in various disciplines, in addition to a self-supporting course in Biotechnology at the undergraduate level. ADMISSION PROCEDURE Undergraduate Undergraduate students are admitted based on their TNPCEE (TamilNadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination) and 12th standard (higher secondary school) scores.The High ranking students alone are admitted based on merit. Postgraduate Postgraduate students are typically required to take up an entrance exam conducted by GCT. HOSTELS Seven hostel blocks are available for men and two separate hostel blocks are available for women to accommodate a total of 1,500 students. The hostel is managed by a hostel committee including members from students and faculty. The hostel is run on a no-loss, no-gain basis.
