Fishing Rod Tapers

The taper of a rod, describes how it bends or flexes under pressure. To best understand taper, imagine that you've just cast out a Lure and now you're standing in the boat, holding your rod so that it is pointing straight up in the air.

As you pull back on the lure or a fish, if the taper is extra fast, you'll notice that only the very tip of the rod bends. The other 90 per cent or so of the blank remains perpendicular and rigid.

If the rod has a fast taper, however, the top 20-per cent or so will flex. With medium fast and medium tapers, the top 30 to 40 per cent respectively of the rod will curve. And if the rod has what is called a slow taper, almost the entire blank will bend or flex under pressure, so that the rod resembles the letter "C" when you're fighting a fish.

Rod taper is important for several reasons. You'll want a fast action tip for fishing lures like jigs. This taper is the most sensitive, especially when the rod is made of graphite. You can feel and control what your lure is doing. At the same time, since only the very tip of the rod bends, when you feel a fish, you've got plenty of rod shaft and backbone to set the hook smartly.

At the other extreme, are the rods with slow tapers - that flex and bend throughout much of the blank. They are superb for fighting big fish when you're using light line. That is why an angler who likes to fish split shot rigs or Lindy rigs for walleye, for example, will usually pick a longer and softer action rod than a walleye angler who uses jigs.
