In 2004, the school was awarded the status of 'A Specialist School in the Performing Arts', resulting in the lower section of school being transformed. Because of this, the school is now able to offer 2 Music Rooms, a Media Suite, and a Performing Arts Studio, mainly used for girls Dance. The Drama Studio was also renamed 'The Bridge Theatre' as part of the drive to make the school a place for the community. Within the school, there is also a School Hall and 2 Gymnasiums that are also used for workshops and performances. The PE department is also able to offer an AstroTurf, which is used in PE lessons for sports such as Football, Hockey and Cricket. Until recently, this was open to the public for use of a weekend.

When pupils arrive at the school at the age of 11, they are placed into a house, which they stay in until they leave at the age of 16. They are; Bancroft (Green), Hurst (Gold), Lovell (Purple), and Radcliffe (Blue). These are all named after local people of yesteryear.

In 2006, the school had 33% of students achieving the Level 2 threshold - equivalent to five GCSEs at grade C or above - including English and maths GCSEs, which was fourth out of eight in the Borough Of Halton .

Melanie Chisholm (better known as Mel C) member of British girl pop group The Spice Girls, attended Fairfield High School between 1985 and 1990.
