Everett Hughes




Everett Cherrington Hughes ( November 30 , 1897 - January 1983 ) was a sociologist known for his work on medical education and the study of occupations. A former professor of sociology at Brandeis University , where he helped to found the school's Graduate Department of Sociology, he had also taught at McGill University , and the University Of Chicago and was a visiting professor at Boston College .

In 1963 , Everett C. Hughes was elected by his peers to serve as the 53rd President of the American Sociological Association . His Presidential Address, entitled ''Race Relations and the Sociological Imagination,'' was delivered on August 28 , 1963 at the Association's Annual Meeting in Los Angeles . This address was later published in the December 1963 issue of American Sociological Review (ASR Vol. 28 No. 6 pp 879-890). The American Sociological Association , also cited him in 1982 for his contributions to education. In 1964 , he was elected a member of the American Academy Of Arts And Sciences .

He was married to Helen McGill Hughes, and they had two daughters. He died of Alzheimer's Disease at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge , Mass. , where he lived.
