The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ('''EPSRC''') is a British Research Council that provides Government funding for grants to undertake Research and postgraduate degrees in Engineering and the physical Science s (including Mathematics , Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science ), mainly to Universities in the United Kingdom . The head office is in Swindon , Wiltshire . It was created in 1994. It was formerly a part of the Science And Engineering Research Council (SERC). The EPSRC funds Doctoral Training Accounts (DTA) to allow postgraduate students to spend 3 years engaged in research activities which will lead to a PhD as well as the four year Engineering Doctorate . Science and Innovation Minister, Malcolm Wicks announced the appointment of John Armitt as the new Chair of the EPSRC. He succeeded Dame Julia Higgins on 1 April 2007.
