Engineer Combat Group
The group concept changed from Regiment to Group during World War II under General John C. Lee. It consisted of a Headquarters and Headquarters Company along with Combat Battalions and several smaller companies. These soldiers had a number of functions during combat such as mine sweeping, bridge building etc. and were called upon in the European Theatre to act as infantry units.
