Douglas Academy is a secondary school on the Mains Estate in Milngavie in the outskirts of Glasgow . In 2001, Douglas Academy was Scotland's top performing state school with 31% of students gaining Five or more Highers .2 The school is named after the Douglas Family , who were the previous owners of the estate and donated the land for educational purposes. It is built on the site where the gardens were originally situated, and rare plants can still be found there today. The school was opened on 2 November 1967 . The new Douglas Academy building is soon to be under construction- replacing the old school with a modern new look. The school is said to be bigger, more spacious and better equipt than the previous building. Work is due to start sometime next year. DOUGLAS ACADEMY MUSIC SCHOOL Douglas Academy is home to Douglas Academy Music School, a unit for musically gifted children, who are admitted to the school through audition. The Music School first opening its doors in 1973. Currently, the Course Director of the Music School is Mr Ronald MacIntosh and at present there are many music teachers working at Douglas Academy. Many children in the Music School who live outside the catchment area and are unable to travel to Douglas Academy daily live in Halls of Residence in the West End of Glasgow. REBUILDING WORK The school is one of six of schools in the East Dunbartonshire area to be rebuilt under a Public-private Partnership .
