Major Douglas A. Zembiec, ( April 14 1973May 11 2007 ), the "Lion of Fallujah " was notably an officer in the United States Marine Corps , United States Naval Academy graduate, and All-American collegiate Wrestler . Major Zembiec has been often referred to as the "Lion of Fallujah " as a result of his heroic actions serving as Commander of Company E, 2nd Battalion , 1st Marine Regiment , 1st Marine Division during Operation Vigilant Resolve in 2004. He was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device and a Purple Heart due to wounds incurred in action. He was killed by small arms fire while leading a raid in Baghdad on May 11th , 2007 . The Department Of Defense hasn't elaborated further on the circumstances of his death.
