Despite the similarity in form factor, D-9 gear uses a higher quality tape formulation that is not compatible with S-VHS or D-VHS hardware. Digital-S uses always 1/2 inch metal tape and the datastream is 50 MBps like DVC pro50. Also, it is marketed primarily towards professional users, and is not intended for or sold to the consumer market. Some of the studiogear is capable of recording with pre-read and is provided with 4 channel audio like digital betacam. SDI interfaces are also provided. The relative tape speed by Digital-S is much larger than bij DVCpro and DVcam, so the reliability of Digital-S is much higher.
