The Deer Park Bypass is currently in construction with two contracts. This 9.3 kilometre freeway costs million which also includes a Grade Separated interchange or a "full diamond" at the Leakes Road at Rockbank . The freeway link in Australia between the Western Freeway (the A8) at Rockbank , in the western suburbs of Melbourne , and the Western Ring Road (M80) in Sunshine . The point of the new freeway bypass is to move traffic off the over-stressed Western Highway , which takes traffic from the Western Ring Road. Due to the growth and subdivision in Deer Park and Sunshine, the surrounding suburbs and the seven Traffic Signals between the Western Ring Road and the start of the Western Freeway , substantial long and frustrating delays are created for the 70,000 vpd ( Vehicles per day) with 10 per cent of this are heavy vehicles. On this stretch of road. While the bypass has been suggested since the Western Ring Road opened in September 1990 , then in 1996 the project has been stalled, u-turned, red tape, etc with amid funding quarrels because of mis-management. In 2004 the Federal Government announced that the Deer Park Bypass will be built as part of a 1.4 billion dollar project grant to Victoria (Australia) . It has been suggested that, upon completion of the bypass, more than fifteen minutes will be saved when traveling through the Deer Park area. Construction started on the Deer Park bypass in August 2006 and will be completed by December 2009 . PETER COSTELLO In November 2005 , Peter Costello quoted; "We will fund the Deer Park bypass - With no toll and it will be open to traffic by 2009 and that is a promise to the people of Victoria (Australia) with this project being proposed since 1990 ".
