''Custom Robo'', known in Japan as , is a Video Game title for the Nintendo GameCube . It is a Science Fiction Action Game , as well as the fourth title of the Custom Robo Series . It is also the first Custom Robo title localized in North America . In this title, each player is called a commander, which pilots and customizes a miniature Robot to battle each other in a virtual arena called a Holosseum. Holosseums come in a variety of sizes and layouts, and some even feature environmental hazards, such as ice or lava. The average robo is 30 Centimeter s tall. The first half of the story takes place in "A New Journey" mode. After the story mode is completed, the player may choose to go through the story again or enter a series of tournaments called the "Grand Battle".

PLOT

The story opens with a flash back from the hero's earlier life.
The main character, whose default name is 'Hero', is a child whose father has disappeared. Before his mysterious departure, Hero's father gave him a watch, telling him to keep it safe. At this point, the game leaps to the present and Hero suddenly receives a letter saying his father has just died. In honor of his father's wishes for him to become a Robo Commander, Hero sets out to do so - despite knowing nothing about robos. He eventually manages to join up with a group of bounty hunters known as the "Steel Hearts". Another member of the Steel Hearts, Harry, teaches Hero how to command robos and helps him receive his license. After a few minor errands, Hero and company discover the self-guided Robo known as 'Rahu'. Later, after passing a test and obtaining a Class "S" license, Rahu's past is revealed and Hero finds out that he is a toy bot fused with an invisible organic being who merged accidentally with the toy.

Before the time of the domed city, the world was attacked by a powerful entity - now known as Rahu. Eventually, Rahu came to possess a child's toy. This toy was very similar to a Robo, and actually formed the basis for the concept of Robo Commanding - by popularizing Robo battling, the government gave the people a way to fight the entity. Rahu was soon damaged enough to be driven into dormancy for a long period of time, but has awoken. Hero and the rest of the police force leave the safety of the dome to defeat Rahu again, along with the organization known as the Z-Syndicate, who are trying to control the entity for their own ends. After defeating the syndicate, Hero meets an old friend of his father's- a spy named Sergei. He originally joined the Z syndicate to stop Rahu, but was forced to work with Oboro and Eliza. He showed Hero an old recording of his father's last message to him. In the recording, Hero's father explains that he left to form the Z-Syndicate in an attempt to inform the people of Rahu's impending attack. The other members soon lost sight of his vision and betrayed him in an attempt to the seize control of the Syndicate and Rahu. Hero defeats Rahu, ensuring the world's safety - for a while.

CHARACTERS

  • Hero (Main Character): The main character is a young man whose only family was his father. Your father left you when you were very young, and your mother passed away shortly before that. Your father left you with a watch. You live in a Triplex with a couple, their children, and your landlady and you have a little crush on Marcia .

  • Ray 01: A custom robo that had been top secret until a bunch of thieves raid the lab and you are summoned to stop the thieves and retrieve Ray 01. Ray 01 is the first Custom Robo you can use and is equipped with only standard items. He is a very well balanced Shining Fighter type Robo.

  • Hero's Dad: The main character's dad was once the leader of Z Syndicate. When he died, Z was split in between Oboro and Eliza and Isabella (Eliza and Isabella work together as they are twins). He commanded Ray Legend (illegal), a Shining Fighter model.

  • Harry: A member of the Steel Hearts who first wanted to have you join so that he can boss you around. He tries to be a real ladies man, and for whatever reason, it seems to work sometimes, but he often fails. It turns out after you join, he is still the one being pushed around. He will give you some good tips and advice before most battles, so make sure you listen carefully to what he says. Commands Glory (Shining Fighter)

The only similarity in their battles is that almost all of them use the High Rise Cell as their course.

BODY: Sol
GUN: Ion

  • ---"Illegal" robo parts are restricted in the game. During the ''Grand Battle'' illegal parts count as a handicap and halve your score, and in ''vs. mode'' you can choose if you want to allow them to be used in battle or not. In essence, illegal parts are considered too powerful for legal battles. The scientist who develop them (in A New Journey) say that they are illegal because they can seriously injure or kill someone via robo battling.

  • ---"Can" parts are just the opposite of illegal parts (They still count as illegal parts), in that they are vastly underpowered versions of the Standard and Basic parts. They serve as a way of handicaping one's self, to give one's opponents a better chance of winning (the Can legs, for example, reduce the movement stats of the robo below what they would be with the Standard legs). Other than that, they are practically useless.

TRIVIA

  • Some custom robos (including Ray 01) later appeared in '' Custom Robo Arena ''. Some of these robos were introduced as different models (like Seal Head was reintroduced as Seal Kid in " Custom Robo Arena " and instead of being a Funky big Head, it was a Big Boy.

  • The model for the body parts Rahu I,II,& III, were originally designed to be black instead of silver. His "internal organs," or the cable-like components of the Rahu models were also intended to be a dark shade of blue.

  • The 3 "Legendary Commanders" of the Computer Battle in the Police Squad HQ appeared in the previous 3 ''Custom Robo'' Games that were only released in Japan, but they have different (''non-Japanese'') names.

  • In the "Steel Hearts" Building, behind Ernest is a wanted poster for the character Marv, (which then leads to a call from Ernest concerning Marv's capture, but was too late in capturing him). Marv is also one of the "3 Legendary Commanders" that appear in the computer battle in the "Grand Battle" mode and he appears in Custom Robo Arena.

  • Ray Legend is actually the original Ray model for the very first Custom Robo game. The stats for that version however were much better than the one in this game. Another reference to Ray Mk II is the Custom Robo Statue just Northeast of Daimon's

  • Ray Legend was formally known as Ray Mk II in Custom Robo V2 , only released in Japan. He later appeared in Custom Robo Arena , as the first custom robo to obtain and use.

  • Ray Legend is referred to as a "Shining Fighter" in the game's text. However, its stats and abilities reflect that of a "Little Raider".

  • Ray Warrior's Charge attack is actually the original Ray's charge style from the original 2 games. However Ray Legend's charge was replaced with a different one that goes backwards, while Ray Warrior gets the original version of it.

  • Once you can use it, Lucy's room is filled with the game producers that are represented by minor characters (that there are more than one of.) One of those producers reveal that this is not the first Custom Robo game.

  • During the chapter with the lab, pressing the A button in the northern room near a picture near the window will reveal a description about an autograph by a man called "Kouji Kenjou" who is the creator of Custom Robo.

  • At one point in the game, if the Hero talks to Lucy, she mistakes the mentioned "Z" to be a musical group. She then tells the character that her favorite band when she was young was "The Groovy Goombas". This is most likely a reference to the common enemy of the Super Mario series. She also says that the band's big hit was " Fire Flower Sunshine". (A reference to the item of the Super Mario series and sunshine referencing Super Mario Sunshine .)
