Punk metal (also known as ''Crossover thrash'') is an umbrella term used to describe music that fuses elements of Hardcore Punk and Heavy Metal . This fusion is often believed to have emerged during the early 1980s. HISTORY Punk metal evolved when performers in hardcore punk and heavy metal began borrowing elements of one another's music. Despite some opposition from "purists" in both camps, the marriage seemed natural, as both styles are often intense, Riff -driven, and heavy. Also, the fusion of hardcore punk and Extreme Metal is aided by the fact that both are manically high- Tempo . Hardcore bands generally evolved into the style by developing and performing with a higher degree of musical technique than the average hardcore outfit, and getting bored with the musical limitations of standard hardcore punk. Bands who appreciated the fast punk stylings of bands such as Corrosion Of Conformity , Minor Threat , Misfits , Black Flag and Dead Kennedys , and equally appreciated the fast heavy metal stylings of Motörhead , Venom , and Iron Maiden began combining elements of both styles to form this new music. Especially early on, punk metal had a strong affinity with Skate Punk , but gradually became more the province of metal audiences. Motörhead are considered to be "The Godfathers of punk metal". As Dave Grohl put it "Motörhead were the only metal band that punk kids could add to their leather jackets and still be cool." Early pioneers of the style include American bands Dirty Rotten Imbeciles , Suicidal Tendencies and Septic Death . Boston bands SSD and DYS , as well as later New York bands Cro-Mags and Stormtroopers Of Death were also early pioneers. SEE ALSO |
