HISTORY Education in Warren Township can be traced back to 1672 when the French missionaries operated schools over the territory. The first secular school of which there is any record was in Vincennes in 1793. Education in the Territory got its first beginnings with the Land Ordinance of 1785 which divided the land into townships with one section to be sold to support education locally. The first legal basis for education came from the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which provided for the governing of the Northwest Territory. Public schools were not established until 1851 on a local option plan. In 1851 Warren was divided into 9 school districts having 11 school buildings. Another school was added later for a total of twelve. There were two early high schools, Cumberland and Shadeland Schools, which combined in 1924 to form Warren School. Warren Central High School was opened in 1924 at the corner of 10th and Post Road, which is currently the police academy. Classes began in the new Warren Central High School (on E. 16th St.) on September 6, 1960 with Woodview Junior High opening in the same month. The senior high grades went on to the new high school, and grades seven, eight, and nine attended the junior high at old Warren. For a short time (1958-1959) Moorhead was used to house the seventh and eighth grades until the opening of Woodview in 1960. Creston then opened its doors in 1964. Stonybrook opened in 1972. Creston and Stonybrook became the only junior highs in 1981, when Woodview closed its doors. Creston opened in 1964 with a staff composed of mostly new teachers and some from Woodview. Creston was named for its location near a "Crest" in the area. In 1995 Creston Junior High converted to a middle school.
