Covington High School
Covington High School is a public secondary school in Covington, Virginia , United States. It is part of Covington City Public Schools and is located on 530 South Lexington Avenue. SCHOOL INFORMATION Covington High School is the sole high school for Covington City in the Alleghany Highlands, and is one of the smallest high schools in Virginia. Unlike most larger school districts whose high schools enroll 9th-12th graders, Covington holds students from the 8th grade through 12th grade. Covington's population has steadily declined since the 1970's due to a decline of the use of railroads which run through the area, a decline of the paper mill industry, though MeadWestvaco continues to have large plants in the area as well as in surrounding Alleghany County . In fact, Covington City's school population is expected to drop about 20% in the next 5 school years. Consequently, there have recently been talks between the Covington and Alleghany County School Boards about consolidating into one school district which would almost definitely spell Covington High's demise, as it was for Clifton Forge High School in 1983 when it consolidated into Alleghany High School . Because of the high costs of new schools and the general economic condition of the Alleghany Highlands; there are many in the Covington community that feel Covington High School should be expanded, renamed, and used as the county's sole high school due to its solid construction, and location that is both central to the area's enrollment and out of the flood plain. DEMOGRAPHICS Covington High School in 2005-2006 was 79% White; 20% Black, and 1% Asian. ENROLLMENT HISTORY TEST SCORES Covington High School is a fully accredited high school based on the Standards Of Learning tests in Virginia. ATHLETICS The Mascot is a Cougar and the sports teams currently play in the A Pioneer District and Region C . The Cougars have won one state title, which was a Group A football title in 1984. They have lost to rival Alleghany 11 years in a row now. Before the late 1970's, Covington was a AA school participating in the AA Blue Ridge District . |
