Consumer generated media (CGM) originated as a reference to posts made by Consumers within online venues such as Internet Forums , Blogs , Wikis , discussion lists etc., on products that they have purchased. Shoppers who are researching products often use other consumers' opinions when making buying decisions. The term has evolved to include video, audio and multimedia posts created by consumers in support (or negative parody/in-protest) of products, brands and corporate institutions. Pete Blackshaw CMO for Nielsen Buzzmetrics[http://www.nielsenbuzzmetrics.com , coined the term "consumer generated media" (CGM) years ago to describe the evolving consumer created space on the internet. The idea has evolved from its early roots of consumer feedback via online letters and email to encompass new medai such as video (youtube.com, sharkle.com, reever.com), pictures (flickr.com), and social networking sites (ranging from capessa.com, a Proctor and Gamble sponsored women's health site to facebook and myspace). Recently, he has developed new terms such as "consumer generated media2"(CGM2 to describe the online video explosion and "consumer fortified media" (CFM) to describe the use of programs such as digg.com[http://www.digg.com] Consumer-generated media is a key theme of Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba's book, Citizen Marketers The book examines several examples of consumer-generated media wielding at least as much power as Corporate Communications . Examples include Jeff Jarvis ' unofficial blog campaign about his "Dell Hell" experience, the independent iPod fan site ILounge and the TiVo Community Forum . (A full list of examples is at [http://www.creatingcustomerevangelists.com/cm/examples.asp . Semiotician Jake Pearce, business journalist Simon Young and youth activist Ilai Amir are putting forward the theory that consumer generated media is driven by a rising generation, Generation C , the people aged 0-20 who were born into the digital age.
