Clayton Bypass




The Clayton Bypass is a four-lane highway currently under construction in Johnston County , North Carolina . When completed, it will hold traffic on US Highway 70 passing Clayton, North Carolina .


CONSTRUCTION

The bypass was first planned in 1991 , but several setbacks, including controversy over building a bridge through territory of an endangered mussel, held up beginning the project until 2005 . Construction remains underway, with a possible finish in 2008 or 2009 .


ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The bypass goes to the west of the town of Clayton and east of the rapidly-growing Cleveland community in Johnston County. It will be a limited access freeway, with interchanges at Interstate 40 , NC Highway 42 , Ranch Road, and US 70 Business between Clayton and Smithfield . To complete the bypass, US 70 will overlap with I-40 for four miles to meet with US 70 between Garner and Clayton.
