Residents erect giant plywood greetings in their front yards depicting cartoon characters, religious images, or Christmas themes.

Started in 1985, about 15 families on Ellingham Street participated. Now there are about 200, spreading onto Oviedo and Renato streets. (The neighborhood is northwest of the intersection of Carmel Mountain and Black Mountain roads.) Visitors often park and walk, but many drive slowly around the neighborhood, creating extreme congestion on Fridays and Saturdays.http://www.donkinghomes.com/content/community-ranchoPenasquitos.html Residents often complain of the congestion and some inconsiderate visitors, but most see it as a welcome feature to their neighborhood.http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-diego/6369-why-rancho-penasquitos-bad-choice-2.html School and scouting organizations often sell baked goods and hot chocolate and members of the local school bands play Christmas carols, while other organizations will rent horse-drawn carriages, double decker buses, or limousines and sing carols while driving around the neighborhood.23

The displays start going up right after Thanksgiving , with most in place by the second week of December and staying there through New Year's .
