Originally constituted as the Laboratory of the Government Analyst in 1896 and later as the Government Chemical Laboratories, the Chemistry Centre has continued to evolve and play a major role in the delivery of scientific services to the benefit of the Western Australian community. During the period from 1950 to 1980 it was a major partner in the research and development of the State’s agricultural and mineral industries. Highlights of this period included the creation of the ‘Beecher’ process for the refining of Ilmenite and the identification and characterisation of trace element deficiencies in soils which, at that time restricted agricultural development. The latter years have seen the organisation becoming increasingly involved with issues concerning sustainable development, forensic science, occupational health and environmental protection. More recently the Chemistry Centre has accepted a lead responsibility for the provision of the emergency response capacity that is required to deal with major chemical incidents and the threat of terrorist CBR (chemical, biological and radiological) activities. The Chemistry Centre also provides scientific expertise and advice to agencies tasked with protecting public and occupational health and safety, managing environmental issues and regulations and ensuring the proper administration of justice.
