Charity Tate (née '''Dingle''') was a fictional character in the ITV soap
'' Emmerdale ''. Charity was played by actress Emma Atkins .

Charity arrived in '' Emmerdale '' in 2000 on the run from the law. It later emerged that she had been working as a Prostitute for several years and the police had a warrant for her arrest for Soliciting .

She began living with her uncle Zak Dingle and his wife Lisa and soon began to make a play for wheelchair-bound millionaire Chris Tate . She managed to wangle a job at Tate Haulage and eventually she seduced him and they began a secret affair. However their relationship was far from easy as she soon made an enemy of his jealous younger sister Zoe Tate , who was secretly infatuated with Charity . Charity used the fact that Zoe was a Lesbian to her advantage and shared a kiss with Zoe in a bid to get her on side before taking things further and having sex with her. With Zoe reeled in, Charity soon began to face other problems with her skeletons came tumbling out of the closet. Her old pimp Ray Mullan , who was dating barmaid Louise Appleton , had arrived in the village and began to manipulate and blackmail Charity . She tried to gain the upper hand by showing his Prostitutes that there was so much more to life than what their shady pimp had to offer. Eventually a spiteful Ray informed Chris of his girlfriend's sordid past and he broke up with her, also sacking her in the process.

However Chris began to realise that he was in love with Charity and, with Zoe kept sweet by his ex-girlfriend in a bid to get back into the Tate empire, he eventually summoned Charity to Tate Haulage and proposed to her. She rejected him at first, but then informed him that she would marry him on the condition that she be entitled to half the business and he change his name from Tate to Dingle , instead of her changing her name from Dingle to Tate .

Despite the latter not going to plan, Chris and Charity married on 27 November 2001 with his employee Terry Woods as his best man and her friend Chloe Atkinson as her bridesmaid.

However after a year of marriage, Chris became more focused on business and less attentive to his wife, and Charity was becoming bored. Tragdy occurred for the Tate family when Zoe , who had recently been diagnosed with Schizophrenia , discovered that she was 5 months pregnant in September 2002 . With no recollection of what happened, Zoe decided that she must have been raped and decided to have an Abortion . Charity stood by her sister-in-law and accompanied her to the abortion clinic and when Zoe decided that she couldn't go through with the termination, Charity confided in her about her own teen pregnancy and that she had given her baby up for adoption. After listening to Charity 's story, Zoe decided that she would also give her baby up for adoption.

After Zoe gave birth to her daughter Jean Tate on 24 January 2003 , Charity was stunned when Debbie Jones , the daughter she had given up for adoption when she was a teenager, returned to her life. It soon became apparent that Debbie 's adoptive mother Pat Jones was terminally ill and had told the teenager the identity of her biological mother. At the time Debbie was staying with foster carers Paddy and Emily Kirk . Charity at first wanted nothing to do with Debbie , but when her adoptive mum Pat died Charity comforted her and soon maternal instincts began to kick in. After fighting the Kirk's for custody of Debbie , she was elated to be reunited with her daughter and a couple of weeks later her husband Chris announced his intentions to adopt Debbie .

However pretty soon Debbie started asking questions about her biological father and eventually Charity decided to summon both father and daughter together. It emerged that her cousin Cain Dingle had got Charity pregnant when she was 12-years-old and as a result she gave birth to Debbie at 13, but so as not to disgrace her family she put her up for adoption. However word got around the family and although none of them knew that Cain was the father, they disowned Charity and after being kicked out she resolved to Prostitution .

Cain and Debbie eventually warmed to each other and Chris began to feel shut out, so he abandoned his ideas of adopting Debbie . After he left for a business trip in April 2003 , Charity was onced again bored. However, she had become attracted to her cousin Cain again and after learning that the feelings were mutual, they began an illicit affair. The affair was eventually discovered by Chris , who decided to keep it to himself and extract his own revenge. He did, however, throw his adulterous wife out in August 2003 but a month later he informed her that he wanted to see her and discuss their current situation. Charity turned up and was devastated when Chris announced that he wanted a divorce. She pleaded with him and promised that the affair was over, but then Chris took a drink of what turned out to be poison, which killed him outright in front of a distraught Charity . She was left widowed on 17 September 2003 .

It soon dawned on Charity that Chris had set her up and taken his own life in order to extract revenge on her for her affair with Cain . But it was too late as the grieving widow was arrested for the murder of her husband. She was later released on bail and went to live with her cousin Marlon Dingle , as her uncle Zak told her that she was no longer welcome in his household. After one too many drinks, Charity had a One-night Stand with Marlon , which left him guilt-ridden as he was married to Tricia . She began blackmailing her cousin, but eventually Tricia discovered the truth and a distraught Charity was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment.

However in October 2003 Charity discovered that she was pregnant, but she was unsure of who the father was. On 1 March 2004 Charity collapsed in her cell and was rushed to hospital, where it was discovered that she had pre-eclampsia and had to have an emergency Caesarean Section in order to save both her and the baby's life. She gave birth to a little boy that she named Noah Tate , but it was still unsure whether her son would live or not. After Cain and Marlon both took paternity tests, it was revealed that her late husband Chris Tate was in fact the father. Devastated, Cain took nothing more to do with her.

After fully recovering from the traumatic birth, Charity was to return to jail to complete her sentence. Her former sister-in-law Zoe then announced that she wanted to raise Noah as her own. She paid £20,000 for her nephew and provided damning evidence at Charity 's appeal that Chris had in fact killed himself. Now released, Charity returned to live with the Dingle's, but her daughter Debbie was horrified by her mother's actions due to her selling her halfbrother, that she burned the £20,000 on the barbecue, with a furious Charity screaming at her.

Eventually a custody battle ensued as Charity realised that she did want her son to be a part of her life. After weeks of battling, Charity was delighted when she received custody of Noah and went back to playing happy families.

A new family soon arrived in the village and it wasn't long before . She began working as his secretary at Home Farm and they developed a close relationship. However the arrival of his daughter-in-law Sadie King in May 2004 threatened to put a spanner in the works. Eventually Charity gained the upper hand when Tom proposed to her, but Sadie had another trick up her sleeve. Already embroiled in a passionate affair with Charity 's ex-lover Cain , Sadie used him in a bid to set up Charity by kissing her whilst she hired a photographer to snap the illicit pair.

On Tom and Charity 's wedding day on 3 January 2005 , a triumphant Sadie showed her devastated father-in-law the photos and he decided to cancel the wedding. Charity was devastated as she had now lost her man, her home and her job. After a catfight with Sadie at the church she left to the Dingle's, but vowed revenge.

In February 2005 Charity seduced Tom 's oldest son and Sadie 's husband, hapless Jimmy King . They began an illicit laision which lasted for weeks. However, unbeknownst to Jimmy , Charity had taped them having sex and was going to show Tom and Sadie everything. And to add more fuel to the fire, Jimmy confessed on the tape that Sadie had set the whole thing up between her and Cain . On Jimmy 's 40th birthday party on 1 March 2005 , Charity played the tapes in front of everyone, much to Jimmy and Sadie 's horror. As a result, Tom threw Sadie out, who decided to end her marriage with Jimmy , despite the fact that she'd been having affairs with both Cain Dingle and Robert Sugden .

After making a truce with Tom , Charity decided to leave the village that night. Distraught that Debbie wouldn't come with her, she tearfully went up to home farm to pack.
