On the 8th June 1982 , at the height of the Falklands War , a very heavy Argentine airstrike was launched against British shipping in San Carlos Water on the west coast of East Falkland . Several ships suffered damage, but the worst loss of life occurred when the landing ship RFA ''Sir Galahad'' was struck by three bombs which created a flash fire across her loading decks, killing 48 of her crew and passengers, and wounding dozens more, including Simon Weston . At the same time, two men were killed on RFA ''Sir Tristram'' when it was strafed, and another six on a small landing craft of HMS ''Fearless'' , which was blown up by rocket fire in Bluff Cove .
