Call Detail Record

Traditionally, CDRs were output from a Serial Port on a piece of telecom hardware. On a PBX this port is sometimes a RS-232-C receptical meant to be used to connect to a printer, call accounting system, or a telephone call recording system.

More recently, CDRs are stored in a File , which is regularly downloaded to the call accounting software by a polling job. The call accounting software then processes the CDRs, rates (prices) each call and amongst other things, produces bills for customers. Some mobile/cell operators even operate an immediate CDR collection process that allows call charges to appear on customer account pages of their website within minutes of call completion.

Where CDRs are stored by a telecom service provider, the records for a particular account can sometimes be downloaded at the request of the subscriber who holds that account. If the telecom provider supplies users with itemized bills, CDRs are represented by each itemized line on the bill.

A CDR may represent more than one type of call traffic. For example, fixed line voice traffic, fixed line data traffic or a GPRS session. The call types are identified inside the CDR itself and are used for rating purposes.

Call Accounting Software is generally used to retrieve and process CDR data.

Call Detail Recording or Station Message Detail Recording (SMDR) uses CDRs to record recent system usage, such as the identities of sources (points of origin), the identities of destinations (endpoints), the duration of each call, the amount billed for each call, the total usage time in the Billing Period , the total free time remaining in the billing period, and the running total charged during the billing period.

In a telephone exchange, these Call Detail Recordings contain the information about all the calls passing through the exchange. The recordings are made by Automatic Message Accounting (AMA) and processed by the Billing support system (BSS).
