Burlington is a town in Hartford County , Connecticut , United States . Situated at the foot of the Berkshires and bordering the Farmington River, Burlington is a scenic hill town, rural in nature, located 20 miles west of Hartford. Incorporated in 1806, The population was 8,190 at the 2000 census. Burlington is home to the State of Connecticut Fish Hatchery and the Nepaug Reservoir. Almost 50% of the land in the town is owned by three public water supply companies and the State of Connecticut. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 78.8 Km&2 (30.4 Mi&2 ). 77.2 km&2 (29.8 mi&2) of it is land and 1.6 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it (2.07%) is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 8,190 people, 2,840 households, and 2,416 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 106.1/km&2 (274.8/mi&2). There were 2,901 housing units at an average density of 37.6/km&2 (97.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.44% White , 0.59% African American , 0.05% Native American , 0.73% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 0.23% from Other Races , and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.34% of the population. There were 2,840 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.9% were Married Couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% were non-families. 11.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.12. In the town the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males. The median income for a household in the town was $82,711, and the median income for a family was $87,801. Males had a median income of $54,730 versus $43,429 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $36,173. About 0.5% of families and 1.1% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 0.9% of those under age 18 and 1.9% of those age 65 or over. SCHOOLS Regional School District #10 serves the Connecticut towns of Burlington and Harwinton and was established in 1962. The four schools of the district, Lewis S. Mills High School, Har-Bur Middle School, Lake Garda School and Harwinton Consolidated School, have a total enrollment of more than 2800 students. The communities have a commitment to high quality schools meeting the academic needs of a wide range of students. Burlington, with a current population of 7,800, and Harwinton, with a current population of 5,300, are growing, attractive, suburban communities with residential areas scattered between large pockets of watershed-protected land.
