Of the 20-30,000-plus Bulgarians in London, most are established in the Haringey and Islington areas. Many work in the Manual Labour and Hospitality sectors. There is also a strong Bulgarian community in Scotland, in particular, the Dundee area with plans for a Slavic East European Institute centred in the city. Other favourite haunts of Bulgarians in London are the ‘Juliana’, ‘Plovdiv’ and ‘Lotus’ cafes – all located within walking distance of Turnpike Lane Underground station – with each understood to have opened in the past 12 months. ‘Strikers’, in Kensington and run by former Bulgarian international footballer Bontcho Guentchev , has been around for longer, but is believed to have recently ceased to operate as a commercial entity.
