Browns Town, Jamaica




Brown's Town, Jamaica is the town where Ugli Fruit originated.


GENERAL

This large rural town is located in the constituency of St. Ann North Western, which is currently represented by Verna Parchment of the JLP. It serves as the main commercial area for the following districts: Aberdeen, Standfast, Benin, Buxton, Dumbarton, Gibraltar, Goshen, Liberty Valley, Orange Hill, Philadelphia, Retreat, Trysee and Wilberforce. The town has not seen any meaningful improvement in its physical infrastructure for in excess of the past twenty five years. Despite its abundance of human capital it has very minimal manufacturing industries. The town functions as a provider of services and a commercial centre for many other rural towns and districts.


ECONOMY

The main source of income this town is agriculture, bauxite and tourism. Although the bauxite and tourism industry are not located in the town, many residents of the town work in these industries. It is home to Ministry of Agriculture cattle research facility. Additionally, Brown's Town provides a large pool of skilled and unskilled labourers for new construction projects on the north coast.


EDUCATION

It is the educational capital of St. Ann.
It is home to Brown's Town High School, Brown's Town Primary School, Brown's Town Community College, Brown's Town Infant School, Brown's Town Basic School, St. Hilda's High School, Servite Primary School, York Castle High School and Ministry Of Education's Regional Office.
