The term bad bitch is commonly used in Hip Hop songs. While the word bitch has traditionally been used to describe women in a Derogatory manner, in hip hop, a woman who is a bad bitch is seen in a positive light. A bad bitch is considered to be, among other things, a woman who is independent, mentally gifted, organized, self confident, attractive, and someone a man would be proud to be with. While it may be confusing that two words that have traditionally had negative meanings can make up a positive concept, one needs to only consider that within certain social groups, words can often time take on a meaning that is unique only to the group members, such as Nigga to the African American culture, or Trap to the drug culture. If a person is not fully immersed in the culture, they probably are not going to understand the shared meanings of certain words. USE IN BOOKS Many scholars and Feminists have written books and articles discussing a few ways in which the term "bad bitch" could hold positive connotations. Here are a few examples:
USE IN MUSIC Trina is the self titled baddest bitch in Hip Hop. Her first album was named '' Da Baddest Bitch '' and her fourth album, '' Da Baddest Bitch II '' is scheduled for a 2007-08 release. In her song, “Da Baddest Bitch” she discusses why she considers herself a bad bitch. In this particular song, Trina talks about how she uses men for money and other material things, and she offers advice to younger women: I got game for young hoes :''Don't grow to be a dumb hoe, that's a no-no/ See if you off the chains Stay ahead of the game, save up buy a condo Sell the pussy by the grands :''And in months you own a Benz/ Another week a set of rims Essentially what Trina is trying to tell her listeners is that if you are going to have sex with a man, try to get something material out of it, don’t have sex for free. Bad bitches do not sleep with men who are "broke". The point here is not that Trina uses men but that she refuses to let them use her. This concretes the ideals that a Bad Bitch is independent and values their self worth. Later in the song, Trina talks about her sexual prowess when she states the following: I make him eat it while my period on A little nasty ho, red-bone but a classy ho Young jazzy ho and don't be scared If you're curious just ask me hoes And yes dick sucking comes quite natural I'm da baddest bitch what Trina is saying that she is a woman who can get nasty, but also has an aura of class about her. A good bad bitch has a delicate balance of both. She is a woman who knows what she wants when it comes to having sexual relations with a man and is good at pleasing the man she is with at that particular moment. Lil Kim Lil’ Kim has also used the term bad bitch to describe herself. Y'all mad cause niggas love my style Colgate smile, I'm a bad bitch child Lil’ Kim has also been know to use a variation of the word bad bitch such as ‘Q.B.’, ‘queen b’, or ‘queen bitch’. These words have a synonymous meaning with the word bad bitch in terms of Lil Kim. Live from NYC it's Q.B. The heavy weight champ female emcee Lil’ Kim uses the terms in such a manner to state that she is one of the best female rappers and she is proud to be a bad bitch. Lil’ Webbie Lil’ Webbie released the song “Bad Bitch” in 2005 on his debut album Savage Life . This song could be interpreted by some as a song praising and glorifying all bad bitches. This song gives a good example of what a bad bitch might mean to some men: The girl be, cookin and cleanin and cleanin and cookin She be, constantly douchin and cleanin her pussy And when she step on the scene everybody be looking And to get in them jeans everybody be wishing Lil’ Webbie is stating that a bad bitch is a woman who knows how to take care of the house by cooking meals for the family and keeping it clean and in am orderly fashion. A bad bitch is also a woman who practices good personal hygiene. A bad bitch is someone who is attrative and turns head when she walks into a room, and she is someone who all the men wish that they could get with. But she only want players who far from rookie And if you ain't got the cake Can't play with the nookie Here Lil’ Webbie is echoing Trina in saying that a true bad bitch is not going to have a sexual relationship with a man who is not in a good financial position. Don't like to get dirty and don't mind working And she don't mind giving me some mouth and lip service Here the artist is saying that bad bitches have a steady job and can perform sexual favors for her man. :''I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that mean man/ Own damn house flossed out big screen man Bad bitches holla business first then streets man Lil' Webbie is saying that a bad bitch is independent and a smart business woman. SONG ANALYSIS "Like their male counterparts, women Rap about aspects of inner city life and their desire to be 'number one'; unlike male rappers, they shed light on everyday realities from a woman's perspective. Other women utilize the rap medium as a dialogue with their audiences about exploitative male relationships from a feminist perspective." 3 Women known as bad bitches often follow these patterns. Some female rappers such as Lil Kim or Trina have made a name for themselves by using the "bitch" persona in a way that shows power and independence rather than negativity: This shows that Trina wants to be known for being financially stable and able to please her man, both of which are aspects that are appealing to men as well as independent women. Trina feels that she must represent for the all the "Bad Bitches" worldwide. Evidence of that comes from Trina's song "Baddest Bitch" where she starts her first verse by saying, "I'm representin for the bitches, all eyes on your riches." 5 She is trying to show that these bad bitch qualities are really qualities that a woman should be proud to have.
