The Automotive X PRIZE is a prize from the X PRIZE Foundation . INTRODUCTION The goal of the Automotive X PRIZE (AXP) is to inspire a new generation of viable, super-efficient vehicles that help break dependency on Oil as automotive fuel and stem the effects of Climate Change . The multi-million AXP purse will be awarded to the teams that win a stage race for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPG equivalent fuel economy. WHY AN AUTOMOTIVE X PRIZE?
The AXP will break through these roadblocks by focusing on tangible results – the creation of practical, clean and super-efficient vehicles that people want to buy. COMPETITION SUMMARY
COMPETITION GUIDELINES To encourage feedback, the AXP has published draft Competition Guidelines {Link without Title} , now open for public comment from April 2 to May 31, 2007. The product of thousands of hours of effort by the AXP and world-class advisors, the Competition Guidelines are based upon sound principles of fairness, inclusiveness and independence. COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS The AXP will challenge teams to design, build and demonstrate vehicles that are super-efficient and production-capable, not concept cars. Requirements include:
VEHICLE CLASSES Teams can compete in two vehicle classes – Mainstream and Alternative. The Mainstream vehicles will carry 4+ passengers with 4+ wheels; Alternative vehicles will carry 2+ passengers with no minimum wheel requirements. Both classes have the same requirements for fuel economy and emissions, but have different design constraints. THE AXP RACE SERIES The AXP will culminate with two dramatic, long-distance stage races in 2009 to test qualified vehicles – a Qualifying Race and the Grand Prize Final. Race courses will reflect typical consumer driving patterns during numerous stages, in varied terrain, communities, and weather conditions. To win the multi-million dollar Automotive X PRIZE, vehicles must complete both races with the lowest overall time averaged over all scoring stages while still meeting the AXP requirements for fuel economy and emissions.
CITATIONS OFFICIAL CONTENDERS Society for Sustainable Mobility 's open source design team will enter the contest with their Kernel(tm) electric drive system. REFERENCES
