Australia competed at the ''' 1976 Summer Olympics ''' in Montreal , Canada .
Australia's performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games was its worst in almost four decades. For only the fourth time in the 21 modern Olympic Games, Australia failed to win a gold medal. It won just one silver and four bronze medals, most of them in the lower-profile sports. It was this result that spurred Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser to set up the Australian Institute Of Sport .
