A Mystik Spiral album cover photo shoot goes wrong when the Lane's gazebo in their backyard, where the shoot is taking place, collapses. The band decides against continuing the shoot citing the collapse as a near death experience that has left them traumatized. After Daria comes to witness the remains, Trent and Jane's brother Wind shows up, confuses Daria for his sister Penny and mourns the gazebo's loss, calling it the "Naming Gazebo." According to Wind, the gazebo is where he was brought by his parents and given his name Wind. He convinces Trent and Jane to fix the gazebo. Division of labor: Jane will find a way to raise the money and Trent should find the workers. Using the phonebook, Trent calls the paramedics and asks them if they "fix gazebos." Jane decides to sell her art at an "Art in the Park" event happening locally. Among Jane's original pieces is a Van Gogh painting, "Starry Night", right side up but painted upside down, which she plans to sell for $10 million. Tom and Daria attend to see how things are going. The "topsy-turvy Van Gogh" confuses some potential art admirers. A man, Gary, approaches Jane's booth and is immediately smitten with the Van Gogh and offers to hire Jane as a copy artist at Gary's Gallery, because Larry's Louvre was taken according to Daria, on commisssion and include her Van Gogh among her earnings. Jane accepts saying, "Well, I need a new gazebo." Trent eventually finds a group of workers who give a quote on the gazebo but are lazy to get started working. When pressed to do so by him, the workers call Trent "the man." Jane's new job invades her school life and is caught painting a Van Gogh in art class. She is not reprimanded. She is instead simply advised not to lose her original point of view. Only doing Van Goghs, she feels satisfied but is soon asked to do works of other artists, such as Georgia O' Keefe. After catching her painting one of her copies in her room while attempting to complain about the workers not working, Trent accuses Jane outright of selling out. When Jane rubs Trent's "negative bank balance" in his face, Trent replies, "I'd rather balance my artistic statement than my bank statement," a statement that confuses both of them. Afterward, Jane reveals a suspicion to Daria that Gary may be profiting more than what Jane is earning on her paintings by passing them off as the real thing. Using Daria as a distraction that in the end proves useless, the name of the person who purchased Jane's last creation is revealed to Jane by Gary himself. It's Brittany's father. Daria and Jane visit Brittany's house, who is very surprised to receive them but is exicited to after hearing they came to ask about her father's art collection. After finding her painting and meeting Brittany's father, Jane asks if the painting, a copy done by her, was an authentic Van Gogh. Much to her dismay, he reveals he knew well it was a copy done by a "bunch of hacks" from a local gallery and even proceeds to point out "lazy brushwork." Jane soon quits her job at the gallery. After catching Trent and the workers asleep by the half-completed gazebo, Jane gives them an ultimatum and forces Trent to help the workers finish the gazebo by the time Trent and Jane's parents arrive. The gazebo gets done, Jane has no regrets about leaving Gary's Gallery and Trent deals with his sore muscles after so much hard work. However, all proves in vain after Mr. and Mrs. Lane arrive and decide to tear down the gazebo. When told of Wind's story, Amanda (Mrs. Lane), remembers that the story of the "Naming Gazebo" was simply made up to keep Wind from changing his name to Ronald. This leaves Trent and especially Jane wanting to kill Wind. |
