''America's Next Top Model'', Cycle 5 was the fifth cycle of ''''' America's Next Top Model '''''. The majority of the season took place in Los Angeles , the same location in which Cycle Four was filmed. The judging panel ensemble was altered - Janice Dickinson was replaced by one of the most recognizable models of the 1960s , Twiggy , and Nolé Marin was replaced by runway coach J. Alexander . The theme for this cycle was "Glamour", with the catch phrase "Bling It On". The cast size was reduced from 14 to 13, which has been maintained ever since until season 9. The international destination for the cycle was London , United Kingdom . 19 year old Nicole Linkletter from Grand Forks, North Dakota became the youngest winner ever. She won the grand prize of a photoshoot for the cover of ElleGirl magazine, a fashion spread within ELLE magazine, a contract for representation with Ford Models , and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics. EPISODE SUMMARIES The Girl With The Twisted Catch Phrase (Part 1) / The Girls Become Superheroes (Part 2) '''''Original Airdate: September 21 , 2005 In the first week, the thirteen girls competed in a superhero-themed photoshoot in which each contestant was suspended in the air to take a 'fierce' photograph. Ashley was eliminated in this episode because, though her photograph was not among the weakest in the group, nor her runway walk, the judges felt that she was not a model and was just trying to get by as a pretty girl.
The Girl Who Needs A Miracle ''Original Airdate: September 28 , 2005 '' In the makeover episode, Cassandra, a former beauty pageant competitor who was very attached to her long brown hair, was given the most dramatic makeover. Tyra had doubts about whether Cassandra was more dedicated to pageants or modeling, so she decided to test Cassandra's resolve by giving her a very short blond hairdo similar to Mia Farrow 's character in Rosemary's Baby . Despite much consternation, Cassandra went through with the makeover and shone in the next shoot, in which each contestant partnered with another contestant of her choice, and the two were photographed separately in the same couture-inspired outfit. While Cassandra ironically shined in her new haircut, it was Ebony who was eliminated because of her poor performance in the shoot.
The Girl Who Makes A Disclaimer '''''Original Airdate: October 5 , 2005 In the next episode, the girls pose as fashion victims being chased by the fashion police. During the shoot, unwilling to have her hair cut shorter, Cassandra refused this assignment and was the first contestant ever to quit. In panel, the judges placed Kim, this season's only openly-gay contestant, and Sarah in the bottom two. Sarah was eliminated due to a poor photo, bad runway walk as well as a lack of self-confidence.
The Girl Who Gets A Boob Job '''''Original Airdate: October 12 , 2005 Janice Dickinson , a former panel judge, photographed the remaining contestants in the following plastic surgery-themed photo shoot. Each contestant was photographed as if they had undergone a surgical beauty enhancement procedure gone over the top, as follows: The plus-sized model, Diane, was eliminated due to her lack of confidence and over-awareness of her body.
The Girl Who Loves Bubbles And Talks To Plants '''''Original Airdate: October 19 , 2005 The next episode's challenge was to complete a commercial shoot, photo shoot, and press interview, all advertising ''Secret'' deodorant, in the space of thirty minutes. The undeclared prize was that the girl with the strongest photograph would have her picture run as an actual advertisement for the product in print media. Nicole's photo was selected. Nik was in the bottom 2 with Coryn. Coryn was eliminated because she could not overcome her melancholy demeanor.
The Girls Are 1940s Pin-ups '''''Original Airdate: October 26 , 2005 The contestants shot advertisements for Ford Fusion dressed as Vargas " Pin-up " girls, that same week the 7 girls were coached in a black and white photo shoot with Tyra assisting them. Kyle was eliminated in this round as she failed to be expressive in her face in the pin up shot and use the potential she had to stand out in photo shoots.
The Girl Who Wants To Step On The Pretty Flower This was the recap episode of the season. Revealed during the episode was a bird that almost became the girls' mascot. They named it Mr. Bojangles, and upon Kyle's revelation that the bird kept flying into things, Nicole suggested that all non-domesticated birds were blind.
The Girl Whose Boyfriend Is Cheating On Her '''''Original Airdate: November 9 , 2005 For the following week's episode, the final six contestants shot with the Wild Boyz . Though Nicole and Jayla failed to impress the judges with their photographs and were called forward as the bottom two, Tyra shocked the contestants by announcing that both girls would have to "pack their bags" - because everyone would be going to London . This was the first episode in Top Model history in which no contestant was eliminated.
The Girl Who Talks Behind Everyone's Back '''''Original Airdate: November 16 , 2005 Soon after the final six arrived in London, they competed in a risqué photo shoot in which all six girls at once posed in a London phone booth wearing only panties, galoshes and a newspaper, as if hiding from Paparazzi . At judging, Lisa, arguably the contestant with the most outrageous personality, was eliminated despite taking a strong photograph.
The Girl Who Retaliates '''''Original Airdate: November 23 , 2005 In the following episode, the five remaining contestants posed as modern interpretations of classical art in an advertisement for Quench body lotion by Olay . An argument brewed between Bre and Nicole over Bre's stolen "Granola Bar". Kim was subsequently eliminated due to a lack of consistency during the competition.
The Girl Who Takes A Pill '''''Original Airdate: November 30 , 2005 In the penultimate episode of the cycle, the final four were photographed in a Bollywood -inspired shoot, reflecting the Indian influence on British fashion in recent years. At panel, Jayla was eliminated because, despite her previous strong performance, her more recent series photographs were mediocre, and she had blended into the background of the last shoot.
The Girl Who Is On The Cover '''''Original Airdate: December 7 , 2005 In the season finale, Bre, Nik, and Nicole shot a CoverGirl commercial and stills. While Nik's strong performance was an improvement from her previous showing in the Secret shoot, both Bre and Nicole struggled. Nik was chosen first to continue on in the final round, and then Nicole was chosen over Bre, who became the eleventh girl to get sent home. Nik and Nicole then shot a magazine cover with Tyra Banks , photographed by Gilles Bensimon , knowing that the winner's cover would be published in the February 2006 issue of Elle Girl magazine. They then competed in the final runway competition, in which previous Top Model winners Eva Pigford and Naima Mora participated. At the final elimination panel, the judges favored Nicole's final performance over Nik's, both in the final runway challenge and throughout the competitions, and subsequently Nicole was selected to be the fifth winner of ''America's Next Top Model''.
