The Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa, commonly known as the '''African Association''', was a British society dedicated to the exploration of West Africa .1 The major goals of the association were to discover the location of Timbuktu (little about the Islam ic learning center, in modern-day Mali , was known by Europe ans) and to trace the course of the Niger River .
