Africa Nazarene University

HISTORY

In 1985 , Nazarene leaders began discussions with the Kenyan Commission for Higher Education. This commission, after hearing the church's proposals, recommended the Church start a liberal arts university. In 1987, Nazarene missionary Dr. Harmon Schmelzenbach coordinated the purchase of 70 acres of land in the Maasai Plains. In January of 1990, at the recommendation of the Commission for Higher Education, the Africa Nazarene University Trust was organized with a board of trustees. On November 23, 1993, after three years of preparing a proposal for the University, the Commission for Higher Education granted a Letter of Interim Authority to operate a university. This meant that ANU was the first university to seek a charter under the Kenya 1985 Universities Act. The school began operations in August of 1994. On October 8, 2002, Africa Nazarene University received its charter from the Government of Kenya. History of ANU
