Brahms, who was known to be a curmudgeonly joker, filled his quota by creating a "very boisterous , two Flute s, two Oboe s, two Clarinet s, two Bassoon s, Contrabassoon , four Horns , three Trumpet s, three Trombone s, one Tuba , Timpani , Bass Drum , cymbals, Triangle , and Strings . One occasionally sees the title written in English as "Academic Festival" Overture, but this is a misconstruction in that it groups together the first two English words rather than the second and third. In the German title, the adjective "akademisch" modifies "Festouvertüre", a word that means festive or celebratory overture and figures in the titles of other works like Tchaikovsky's Hamlet/Festouvertüre, Glazunov's Festouvertüre, and Luise Adolpha Le Beau's Festouvertüre für großes Orchester. The Overture consists of four continuous sections:
The composer himself Conducted the premiere at a special Convocation held by the University on January 4 , 1881 , to the chagrin (and mischievous delight) of many of the Academics in the audience. Due to its structural refinement, its lyrical warmth, as well as its excitement and humor, the work has remained a solid staple of today's concert-hall repertoire.
