William Talman (architect)

William Talman ( 1650 – 1719 ) was an English Architect and landscape designer. A pupil of Sir Christopher Wren , Talman's principal work is recognised to be Chatsworth House , considered to be the first Baroque private house in Britain. Talman was reputed to be a surly and rude man, difficult to get on with, this was certainly the opinion of the Earl of Carlisle, and the reason why John Vanbrugh not Talman was selected as the architect for Britain's most notable baroque house Castle Howard .

Kimberley Hall , Norfolk ;
Lowther Castle , Cumbria ;
Milton Hall , Peterborough (UA);
Swallowfield Park , Berkshire ;
Uppark , West Sussex ;
Waldershare Park , Kent .

Talman and his family are imortalised in a portrait by Giuseppe Grisoni at the National Portrait Gallery , London .
