This race was held in 1991-1993, 2001-2006. The 1991-1993 race courses were primarily fire-roads and roads. The 2001 race covered substantially more single-track, double-track and degraded fire-roads than the earlier editions. Every year since 2001 the course has been changed to include more and more single-track. Time records for the 1991-1993 races can not be compared to the later races. Regardless the race has always been physically and mentally demanding.
The winner of the 1991 race was Harry Winard with a time of 6:59:40. He won the race on a Bridgestone MB-0 mountain bike with road type tires, 1.5" Avocet Cross, and a triathlon aero bars, Scott Lemond-Style clip ons. The modern course with a much higher percentage of trails would reduce the chances of anyone from winning on such a bicycle. A write-up of the 1991 race and an interview with Harry Winard was published in the October 1991 issue of Dirt Rag, No 19 pages 42-44.
The winner of the 1992 race is unknown. John Stamstad , an ultra-endurance mountain bike legend, won the 1993 race.
In the 2005 race Chris Eatough set a course record of 6:59:48, breaking his own record from 2003 of 7:04:30 for the modern course. Tiffany Mann, on a single speed bicycle, set a course record for women of 9:14:47.
