The line was built by the
London, Chatham And Dover Railway (LCDR). The train station was opened in 1863 and was originally known as Lower Knight's Hill train station. It took this name from the nearby hill, but was renamed West Dulwich to avoid confusion with another Knight's Hill just a mile south, next to
West Norwood Railway Station .
The typical off-peak service is two trains an hour northbound to
London Victoria (via
Herne Hill and
Brixton ) and two trains an hour southbound to
Orpington (via
Beckenham Junction &
Bromley South ).
