United Utilities (UU) () is a British utility company with its headquarters in Warrington which operates mainly in the North West England . It is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index and employs 17,000 people.

Its water business is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991


HISTORY

United Utilities was created in 1995 by the merger of North West Water and the Regional Electricity Company Norweb . Its shares are listed on both the London Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange (in the form of ADRs). It has around 2.9 million customers for its core water and electricity businesses.


ACTIVITIES

United Utilities' principal activities are managing and operating the regulated . These businesses apply the group's core skills of infrastructure management and business process management in the provision of services to others.

United Utilities is also a significant landowner especially within the Lake District National Park .

United Utilities has also been involved in a number of privatizations in emerging economies, including the very successful Manilla Water and Tallinn water and the more controversial Sofia Water. It has a small wholly owned subsidiary in Australia.

In the year ended 31 March 2006 United Utilities made a profit before tax of £439.3 million on turnover of £2.387 billion.
