From prehistoric times to the early 19th century the main route across the Unicoi Range was the Trading Path , later known as the ''Unicoi Turnpike'', and today known in part as ''Joe Brown Highway'', which crosses the crest of the mountains at ''Unicoi Gap'' (Duncan 2003:185). ''Unicoi'' is a Cherokee word meaning "white," "hazy," "fog-like," or "fog draped." SEE ALSO REFERENCES
