Information About

Toledo Mercurys

The Toledo Mercurys are a former International Hockey League franchise of Toledo, Ohio that played over the years from 1947 to 1962 . The Mercurys were known as the Toledo-Marion Mercurys in '55-'56, and as the Toledo-St. Louis Mercurys for the '59-'60 season. During the 1949-50 season, the team was known as the Toledo Buckeyes , and they participated in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League .

Interestingly, during the 1948-49 season, the team played as the Mercurys North in the IHL North Division, and as the Mercurys South in the IHL South Division, because the team owners wanted to play more games. The Mercurys North won the J.P. McGuire Trophy that year by capturing the IHL North title.

The Mercurys won Turner Cup championships in 1948 , 1951 , and 1952 .

Due to a lack of fan support, the team folded after the 1961-62 season. IHL Ice Hockey returned to Toledo in 1963 , with the Toledo Blades franchise.

The Toledo Mercuries won three championship in the 1948-49 season.
They won the IHL ( International Hockey League), The United States Hockey League and the Eastern United States Hockey Championship which included Boston Olympics Hockey Team and New York Rovers which included big names such as Gump Woresely , Larry Kwong , Bernie Flamon (Boston) , Allan Stanley (Boston) and many outstanding players in all three leagues - including Terry Sawchuk (Windsor Spitfires of the Canadian Division) and Johnnie and Larry Wilson who eventually played for the Detroit Redwings as well Hartley McLeod (originally from Selkirk Manitoba ,Canada) of the Windsor Spitfires ( along with Terry Sawchuk and Johnnie and Larry Wilson) , Marcel Pronovist ( Detroit Auto Club and later with the Toronto Maple Leafs)
Captain and Right Winger of 1948- 49 was Max Labovitch.
Interestingly enough of the 22 players on the 1948-49 Toledo Mercurys 9 were from Manitoba Canada
Max Labovitch was inducted in the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001
The 9 Manitobans who played on the 1948-49 Championship Toledo Mercuries Hockey Team were Barney O'Connell, Dan Mandrick , Jack Kernehan , Donny Thurston , George Burke , George Harison , Stan Fogge and Fred Nelson.
